Small space growing

Most of us don’t have endless acre’s of land to grow on but no worries! It is possible to grow a few of your favorites in the smallest of spaces.

I started off with a few humble pepper plants on a balcony but before I knew it I was growing a whole host of  different crops on my now slightly bigger than the balcony, courtyard. You can grow just about anything in containers or small spaces with a little bit of creativity and ingenuity. This offers the average person like you and me with limited space the opportunity to grow organic, non-gmo healthy food for our families.Though it is just a few of your daily needs, it will benefit you and your health.

A few tips for a thriving garden with limited space:

  • Decide what you absolutely need to plant

Planning is vital to the success of your small garden, decide what your highest priority plants are and map them out in your garden. Once we know were all of your essentials will be, we can go ahead and plant the less important plants in the spaces that is left over.

  • Proper soil
Insuring that you start of with healthy soil and maintaining that soil will ensure that you have a very successful growing season and maximize your harvests, Be sure to research what soil types work best with what plants to ensure healthy growth.

  • Companion planting
Some plants go better with certain plants and some even benefit each other, There are heaps of information on various gardening sites that explain which plants to grow together and how they benefit each other. Ex. Basil can be planted next to most garden vegetables as it improves the growth and flavor of the vegetables and repels mosquitoes.

  • Substitute
Some crops grow and produce much faster than others, when these crops stop producing completely replace them with a new fast growing/producing plant. This ensures that you use all of your available space for maximum efficiency and productivity.

  • Use everything at your disposal
Use every container, pot or bucket at your disposal, the more space for planting the more fresh crops.
Be creative, there is a very long list of household items you can use to plant in, For instance some people use their material shopping bags, boxes, cold drink bottles or even old suitcases.

  • Grow up
Vertical growing is a great way to use space efficiently, there are tons of creative ideas out there.
Use a diy trellis or stacked pots for this purpose, examples below.
